Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. When she was a young girl Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford's passion for acting started as a child. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement on her third attempt made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford did not complete her degree in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
